Where do blind people exercise?

Some of us have exercised all our lives.  When we were younger we called it play.  As we grew, some of us worked out to look great.  Somewhere in your 30s or 40s, you start to understand that there was the need to exercise in order to sustain the quality of your life in your golden years.

But what about if you have vision loss?  As a child, blind or not, you still play.  But as you get older, restrictions, limitations, and your environment start to restrict your level of activity.  Some of these are self-imposed like with all of us. But some of the barriers that individuals with vision loss encounter are barriers that were imposed by external forces.  Society is so used to these barriers and the myths surrounding them that these barriers and beliefs have become the norm.  And norms are hard to break.

I read somewhere that you don’t lift weight with your eye lids…

Blind and Visually Impaired Fitness, Inc., or BVI FIT, is trying to change the perception that blind people do not want to or are not able to exercise.  I mean really exercise.  The kind of exercise where you’re grasping for breath, sweating buckets, and still, you’re hungry for more.  The kind where you wake up in the morning and you’re feeling the good kind of sore.  The kind of exercise that gives you that confidence that you are investing in yourself and it is paying off.  Not everyone that has vision loss was born that way.  And it is true, most individuals who are blind and visually impaired live a sedentary life, but many times this was not their choice.  And while some have tried and somewhat succeeded in climbing over barriers that limit or even restrict healthy exercise, sustainability is rare.

In the NEWS tab there are enlightening articles that support why the BVI FIT movement is not only important but was inevitable.  Sadly, some of these articles were not written recently, because getting recent metrics on this subject has been proven to be difficult… yet, the content is very accurate.  And as you read the articles, and view posted videos, you’ll start to understand how sometimes we don’t see people with vision loss … or maybe we forget that they can’t see us.

Because they are just like you and me… except they can’t see.

More to come…
